Food Labelling

Food Labelling

FoodStream has Associates with many years’ experience in the “technical” aspects of food product labelling.  We can advise whether your label meets legal requirements for sale in Australia, focussing on the finer details of the ingredient list, nutrition information panel, country of origin statement, nutrition and health claims, quantity statement and more.

We generally start with a “label appraisal” (see “Standard Labelling Services” below). A draft (or current) product label is assessed, and a report is prepared outlining any changes required for the product label to comply with the Food Standards Code of Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ), the Trade Measurement Regulations 2009 and of course the new Australian Country of Origin Food Labelling Information Standard 2016 .  This report also identifies any other areas of concern – such as if there is an “unusual” ingredient that may not yet be accepted as legal for food use in Australia.

If required, FoodStream can assist in following up to ensure all legal requirements are met.

If you are still designing your labels, we can work with you to format compliant ingredient lists, nutrition information panels and country of origin statements to ensure that all of the prescribed information is correctly included.

To access these services, see “Standard Labelling Services” below (or call us on 07 3137 1433, or use the contact form on this page

If a more complete service is required – such as to include brand/graphic design – we work with other professionals in this area – such as Renee Weaver of Evolve Brand Design.

Standard Labelling Services:

(i)              Label Appraisal: FoodStream conducts an appraisal of an existing or proposed (draft) label with respect to requirements under the Food Standards Code of Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ), the Trade Measurement Regulations 2009 and the Australian Country of Origin Food Labelling Information Standard 2016. A report will be provided advising whether, in our opinion, the label complies with requirements, and where appropriate highlighting any areas considered to be non-complying (or which, in our opinion, may be open to question). Guidance on how to correct any deficiencies will also be provided.

(ii)            Preparation of Nutritional Information Panel (NIP): FoodStream can either:

  • Determine nutritional information by calculation (based on formulation/processing information supplied by the client) and format a NIP for the label as required under the Food Standards Code, OR
  • Based on nutritional information supplied by the client (eg through laboratory nutritional analysis) FoodStream will format a NIP for the label as required under the Food Standards Code.

(iii)         Preparation of Country of Origin Standard Mark: Foodstream can work with you to determine the appropriate statement for your product, including where necessary the kangaroo logo and bar chart data, to comply with the new Australian Consumer Law requirements.

Other services – such as developing acceptable nutrition and health claims, or obtaining advice on the approval status of “unusual” ingredients – are available.
